Shunkyo Yamamoto
Shunkyo Yamamoto, one of the leading Japanese painters of the modern Kyoto art world, was born in 1872 in Zeze-cho, Shiga Prefecture, and studied first under Bunkyo Nomura and later under Kansai Mori. A close disciple of Mori, who was known as the "Okyo of the Meiji era," Yamamoto established his own style of painting while being influenced by his master, and from the Meiji to Showa eras, he became a major figure in the art world alongside Seiho Takeuchi. Shunkyo's realistic and majestic landscapes are the hallmark of his art, and his experience in the great American wilderness during his visit to the U.S. in 1904 greatly advanced his style. He especially loved mountains, and at his painting school "Sanae-kai," he established the "Yamatake" club and devoted himself to walking and sketching in the mountains. This exhibition commemorates the 150th anniversary of Shunkyo Yamamoto's birth and his relationship with Takashimaya.
