Tatsuo Kawaguchi’s "Relation–Seed" series, which sealed seeds within copper plates, was launched in 1982. The series connected metal, a seemingly unrelated material, to the seed – a form of life energy. “It is no exaggeration to say that this series marked a transformation in Kawaguchi's work," remarked art critic Yusuke Nakahara.
Copper was used in this series only for a few pieces produced in 1982 and 1985. As Kawaguchi stated in the text for this exhibition, the work was originally intended to "convey the life force and energy of a seed and release it into space by covering it with copper." After the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, the material was changed from copper, which conducts radiation, to lead – which blocks it.
This exhibition will feature 14 works, including ones from the rare "Relation-Seed" series made of copper, the "Relation-Ki" (1983-2021) series of raw wood covered with copper, and a watercolor from the same period depicting "Relation-Ki."
