The Imperial Household Artists Program, established in 1890, was designed to honor and protect outstanding artists and craftsmen. A handful of artists were selected as top runners in the art world.

In addition to the promotion of the fine arts, the establishment of the system was intended to save painters and craftsmen who had lost the patronage of the shogunate and clans and were in dire straits due to the Meiji Restoration and to preserve their excellent techniques. The Imperial Household Artists became the highest honor and authority in the art world of the day, and many artists with ties to Kyoto were selected for this position, a system that continued until 1944.

This exhibition introduces 19 artists associated with Kyoto, mainly from the Meiji period when the system was established.
