The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, one of the most historic art museums in the United States, is also renowned for its collection of 50,000 quality ukiyo-e prints. This exhibition presents 118 carefully selected musha-e prints, depicting heroes from ancient myths and military chronicles, by Hishikawa Moronobu, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige and others, alongside tsuba sword mountings with the same imagery as the prints. Bringing 20 famous swords from the mid-Heian period to the end of the Edo period back to their country of origin, including a sword by Yasutsuna of Hōki Province, the exhibition showcases the world of musha-e together with swords from collections in Japan, including those designated as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties.
