The Showa Era - Post-war Japan and the Youth

Tohoku History Museum
Finished
On August 15, 1945, Japan began to seek a better tomorrow and developed its economy and society with an increasing desire to "achieve an affluent lifestyle". In the process, the meaning of "consumption" as the realization of desire expanded and changed to include not only "shopping" for daily necessities, but also "expressing one's personality" and "shopping" as a form of leisure.
This change in the meaning of "consumption" was triggered by the emergence of "young people," the "bearers of new consumption" in the postwar period, and was promoted by them.
With the keyword "consumption as the realization of desire," this exhibition looks back on the progress of the "realization of affluent lifestyles" as the new everyday life after the war and the young people who became one of the main actors of consumption activities in the realization of affluence, along with topics related to them from time to time.
