Artists

Toko Shinoda
Toko Shinoda (born in Dalian, China, 1913-2021) was an artist who greatly expanded the possibilities of Japanese avant-garde calligraphy and pioneered the "sumi-zo" style of abstract ink painting. Shinoda's career began as a calligrapher in her twenties and she soon distinguished herself by creating works that were not bound by conventional calligraphy styles. From 1956 to 1958, Shinoda traveled alone to the U.S. and exhibited her works in New York, the center of the art scene at the time, and gained recognition abroad. This exhibition, as a museum with a long history of permanently displaying Shinoda's works since its opening, will introduce the artist's creative path as well as commemorate her passing last year at the age of 107.
