Machiko Hasegawa et al.
Machiko Hasegawa looks back at the past in "Sazae-san Uchiakebanashi," an autobiographical work the artist wrote at 58. From April 23 to November 12, 1978, the Asahi Shimbun serialized this book over 30 issues. It begins with episodes from Hasegawa's childhood, moving on to Hasegawa's apprenticeship with manga artist Suiho Tagawa, the birth of "Sazae-san," and the interactions with other manga artists. A variety of expression methods were also used, from pictograms alone to illustrations and text to frame-by-frame cartoons. In March of the year following the end of the serialization, a book containing all the stories, "Sazae-san Uchiakebanashi" was published by an affiliated company. The same year, NHK broadcast a drama based on the same story entitled "Ma-chan" from April 2 to September 29. It has again become a hot topic after a lapse of more than 40 years after being rebroadcast in the fall and spring of last year. The exhibition will feature 20 selected episodes out of 30 along with original manuscripts and enlarged paper panels of Hasegawa's drawings. Materials related to "Ma-chan" will also be presented at the end of the exhibition.
