Umetaro Azechi
This exhibition features the work of woodblock print artist Umetaro Azechi. Azechi is a printmaker known for his "Yamao" series of prints. Born in Ehime Prefecture, Azechi moved to Tokyo to become an artist and began making prints when he met print artists Unichi Hiratsuka and Koshiro Onchi. Initially, he produced exclusively urban landscapes. He first encountered the lifelong theme of mountains when he visited Karuizawa on business in the summer of 1937 and saw Mount Asama spewing smoke.

This exhibition introduces the work of Umetaro Azechi from the museum’s collection. A wide range of work will be introduced, from valuable prewar work owned by Asaji Kobayashi, a woodblock print artist from Suzaka who had a close relationship with Azechi Umetaro, to the "Yamao” (Mountain Man) series.
