Since ancient times, waka poems have been a means for the Japanese to express their emotions in a tangible form. Reflecting their feelings in poems by entrusting their thoughts to the changes of nature, they composed poems about beautiful landscapes. The lands repeatedly mentioned in waka poems gradually took on specific images widely shared among poets, who were able to express their own thoughts and feelings without knowing the actual landscapes. The lands associated with the images of waka poetry are today known as "utamakura" (poem pillows).

The utamakura, which became the landscape of the Japanese mind, has since developed a deep relationship with the fine arts. From pictures of famous places depicted with poetic images to crafts decorated with utamakura designs, these poems have enriched the content of Japanese art.

For those of us living in modern times, waka poetry and the classics are no longer rooted in our daily lives, and it may be difficult to identify with the utamakura. This exhibition introduces these landscapes of the Japanese heart and mind once familiar to everyone in an attempt to once again share the many thoughts and feelings that have been incorporated into Japanese art.
