Yuhei Kobayashi
Yuhei Kobayashi (b. 1990, Adachi-ku, Tokyo) is interested in media and techniques on the periphery of printing technology, such as photography, printmaking, and magazines, and draws on and references images from low culture such as manga culture, Yankee culture, hippie culture, and magazine culture in addition to photography and fashion history. The images are printed on silk screens in a printing sequence. These include prints that utilize the sequential process of silkscreen printing, photographic works sized to fit discarded matte frames, photographic works made by pressing printed matter onto negative film in a photographic machine, and sculptures made by reproducing ready-made objects such as empty cigarette boxes. The characteristics of the photographs and printed materials and the process of production itself become the structure of the works, and the passage of time, layering, and compression is reflected in the texture of the works through analog techniques and their speed, which is somewhat contrary to the current digital age and is one of the attractions of the work. Kobayashi's love and admiration for his predecessors and culture can be seen in the title of this exhibition, "See Stars," which is a play on the word "Seven Stars," a reference to the cigarette.
