Maiko of Kyoto

Hasegawa Machiko Art Museum / Hasegawa Machiko Memorial Museum
Finished

Artists

Eitaro Tsuruta, Uotake Nagano, Fuzan Hirano et al.
The exhibition focuses on the works of Eitaro Tsuruta, who visited the Hanamachi district many times to depict the traditional culture of the ancient capital and the maiko who honed their skills there. The paintings "Hitori Ayatori" and "Kyo Maiko," which depict the true faces of maiko who are still young, and "Sakko" and "Kurogami," which depict the process of transformation from maiko to geiko, are painted with painstaking care and evoke a sense of cuteness and at the same time bewitching sexuality. The artist's words on these paintings show his passion and pure love for these young women. Also featured in this exhibition are wood sculptures such as "Hanakai" by Uotake Nagano and "Tachimayagetsu" and "Kagami-jishi" by Fuzan Hirano. Fuzan Hirano, in particular, was in charge of coloring Hirakushi Denchu's "Kagami-jishi," which decorates the lobby of the National Theatre of Japan, and his skill is well known. Other works depicting beautiful and lovely flowers will also be on display, including "Red Hydrangea," "Fuki" and "Fuyo" by Eien Iwahashi, and "Evening Elephant" and "Yo Peony" by Toshio Matsuo.
