Jiro Kinjo
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of Jiro Kinjo, the first Living National Treasure of Okinawa and a renowned ceramic artist representing the region. To commemorate this occasion, the museum will be showcasing works from its collection. Kinjo Jiro was affectionately known as "Jiro-san" and was recognized early on by pioneers of the folk craft movement such as Shoji Hamada, Kanjiro Kawai, and Bernard Leach. His pieces, fired using Okinawan clay and glazes, are characterized by their broad, dynamic style. The fish motifs, intricately carved into the surface, were praised by Shoji Hamada as "laughing fish" and have become synonymous with Jiro Kinjo's name.
