A Legacy of Japanese Tea Ceramics

Raku Museum
Finished
Each generation of Raku potters, including Chojiro I, has lived in their own time and produced their tea bowls in new ways. As the words of Sen no Rikyu in his poem "Rikyu Douka" say, they have been pursuing new styles in the changing times while maintaining the same essence. This is exactly what "Eiyo Ryu" means. Each successive generation of Raku family members has been pursuing the spirit of wabi, which has been sought for 450 years, in their tea bowls, and have been living together with the "tea".

In 2013, "Teihon Raku Rekishi" was published to capture the tradition and creativity of the Raku family and to serve as a "Teihon" (standard edition). Ten years later, the 15th Raku master retired and changed his name to Naoiri, and the 16th Raku master assumed the name Kichizaemon.

After the retirement and succession of their names, "Teihon Raku Rekishi-dai" has been revised to include the latest works of the 15th and 16th generations, and to cover all the marks of the successive generations.

This exhibition features representative masterpieces from Chojiro to Kichizaemon XVI, as well as Honami Koetsu, a relative of the Raku family, and the three generations of Tamamizu ware, which have been studied over the past ten years since the first edition.
