A Mokubei Retrospective

Suntory Museum of Art
Finished
Mokubei (1767-1833), a literati potter and painter representative of Kyoto in the late Edo period, was born in the teahouse "Kiya" in Gion, Kyoto, and was also called “Hachijyuhachi” or Eighty-eight. He took the name "Mokubei" from the "tree" in "Kiya” and "rice" which is a contraction of hachijyuhachi.

In his thirties, Mokubei encountered the Chinese ceramic treatise "Tao Xue" and devoted himself to the pottery business. His work ranges from sencha (tea ceremony utensils) to tea ceramics. His pottery shows his creativity, which is based on his passionate study of antique ceramics and his broad vision to open up new beauty by combining the beauty of antique ceramics from all over the world, transcending traditions.

On the other hand, Mokubei's paintings, which he has painted energetically since his late fifties, have a pure and free-spirited style that is very appealing. Many of them are landscapes, which he gave as gifts to his friends.

This exhibition presents a collection of some of Mokubei's best and most unique masterpieces, which were admired by the literati of the time. Through his ceramics, paintings, and friendships, this exhibition will provide a rare opportunity to experience the full scope of Mokubei's rare life and art.
