A "pilgrimage to a sacred place" is a visit to a place that has been the setting of a movie, novel, manga, or anime. In the case of paintings, visiting places that have been the subject of a work of art or that are closely associated with the artist can be considered "pilgrimages to sacred places.”

The Yamatane Museum of Art is showcasing an exhibition that allows visitors to experience a "pilgrimage to sacred places" without even leaving the museum, by designating places that famous Japanese painters actually visited and painted as "sacred places."

Goshu Hayami's masterpiece "Meiju Scattered Camellia" (Important Cultural Property) depicts the famous “Yae Goshiki Scattered Camellia" tree at Camellia Temple Jizoin in Kyoto, but when compared to its actual appearance, it is clear that Goshu reduced the number of flowers and petals and made them larger and more designed. By learning about the local conditions, we can not only relive the artist's gaze but also discover the ingenuity that went into the work - this is the true appeal of a "pilgrimage to a sacred place of Japanese painting.

This exhibition will feature a wide range of Japanese paintings from Hokkaido to Okinawa, including "Naruto" by Togyu Okumura, who repeatedly sketched the whirlpools of Naruto Strait, "Toshigure" by Kaii Higashiyama, which depicts a view of a Kyoto townhouse from a regular inn, and "Asayo Sakura" by Meiji Hashimoto, whose subject is the "Miharu Takizakura" in Miharu, Fukushima Prefecture, said to be over 1,000 years old.

The exhibition will also feature a number of outstanding works of Japanese-style painting from Hokkaido to Okinawa. We hope that visitors will enjoy a "pilgrimage to the sacred places" to see the painters' favorite places and the sacred places of their masterpieces, viewing the artists' stories and sketches of their works, as well as photographs of the places they visited.
