A Vivid Obake Kingdom - Theory of the Japanese Monster by Taro Okamoto

Taro Okamoto
Taro Okamoto believed that the image of the obake (ghost or spirit) originated from the free imagination of the Japanese people and was deeply interested in obake as a part of Japanese culture. Obake, which play pranks and laugh regardless of human status, are something that Okamoto considered a point of pride for the Japanese.

In Okamoto's works, characters resembling obake frequently appear as representations of the true nature of humans. In the world expressed through Okamoto's calm yet innocent perspective, creatures almost akin to yokai (supernatural beings) run around, laughing at life.

This exhibition showcases the vibrant kingdom of obake created by Okamoto, who continued to produce charming works that, like the obake themselves, defied the existing order.
