Ai Ito
ITO Aiʼs new exhibition “Souvenir” is part of our concept of creating exhibitions together with curators involved in academic arts and exposed daily to new artistic expressions. We are honoured for this exhibition to be curated by MACHIDA Tsukuba who currently works at the Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art (Izumi, Osaka prefecture) who was in charge of the 2017 “Picasso and Japanese Art ‒ Charm of various lines” exhibition.Using traditional techniques, ITO Ai weaves her experiences and memories of the locations and cities she visited, building on the photos and photo collages she made then. While ITOʼs works appear to be photographs or paintings from a distance, as you get closer, the warp and weft structure reveal their woven nature. The travel snapshots carry the lightness of a collage while, at the same time, weaving together different times, locations, perspectives and motifs creates an overwhelming sense of of Time, making us mindful of the weight of the piece. For her first solo exhibition in Tokyo for the past 10 years, we will showcase the “TOKYO Tokyo” piece from her large horizontal “City” series as well as a selection of smaller artworks.
