Since its opening in 2000, the Kyoto Art Center has organized the Meirin Chakai (tea ceremony), the experimental and alternative tea ceremony program featuring hosts from diverse fields, including academia, industry, arts and culture. For the 158th edition, Kyoto Art Center invites Akio Suzukias the host and has the Meirin Tea Ceremony "O To Da Te".

Akio Suzuki, born in 1941 and now based in Amino Town, Kyotango City and Yosano Town in the Northern part of Kyoto, is one of Japan's leading pioneering sound artists. Suzuki has been exploring an attitude of "listening" through a wide variety of practices and projects, continuing to capture the sounds that exist in this world by his physicality and seeking relations between sound and space. One of his remarkable projects is "Hinatabokko No Kukan (Space In The Sun) " which took place on the hilltop in Amino Town, located on the northernmost point of the Japan Standard Time meridian. He spent 18 months creating an open space for "listening" by himself with a brick floor and two brick walls, and in that space, he stayed and listened to the sound of nature the whole day on Autumnal Equinox Day as if in a Zen-like practice. He is also known for his creation and performance of the "Analapos," an echo sound instrument made of two tin cans connected by a spring, which will be performed at this Meirin Tea Ceremony.

The title of this tea ceremony "o to da te," is the name of Suzuki's representative series of works and projects, and a term coined in reference to "Nodate," the open-air tea ceremony enjoying tea outdoors. This ongoing project was first presented at the "Sonambiente Festival Foe Eyes and Ears" (Berlin, 1996), and has been held in more than 50 cities all around the world.

Kyoto Art Center also retains his masterpiece "o to da te" installed during the exhibition "In a Landscape" in 2009. We invite you to stand on this relief combined ear and footprint mark in front of the North Gallery and listen to your surroundings. From there, the Meirin Tea Ceremony by Akio Suzuki will begin.
