Akira Wada
Akira Wada (1978- ) was born in Chiba City and moved to Sakura with his family when he was in elementary school. In 2001, he graduated from Bunka Gakuin College of Arts, Department of Ceramics, and in the same year, he studied under Katsuji Kamitaki, a ceramic artist from Arita who has a kiln in Sakura.

In 2006, Wada became independent and built a kiln in Sakura City. In 2007, he won the Japan Craftsmen's Society Prize at the 35th Traditional Crafts Ceramic Division Exhibition and has steadily built a career as a ceramic artist, winning awards at numerous public exhibitions including the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Kikuchi Biennale, Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and Paramita Ceramic Grand Prize Exhibition. He is now considered one of the leading contemporary Japanese ceramic artists.

Wada's works are characterized by sharp sculptural forms that interweave straight and curved lines, which are formed by carving thickly wheel-thrown vessels.
Wada says that his decision to become a potter in Sakura, where ceramics is not a local industry, was a positive one in that it allowed him to be free from the rules of the pottery industry. This is because of his master's training in traditional techniques, including the potter's wheel, from Arita.

This exhibition brings together approximately 110 of Wada's works, from his student days to his latest creations, to provide a comprehensive picture of Wada Tadashi, an up-and-coming ceramic artist at the forefront of the contemporary Japanese ceramic world, and to reflect on what it means to be a ceramic artist in Chiba on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Chiba Prefecture's birth.
