All About Kaga Hosho: Noh Masks and Costumes

Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
Noh is one of the traditional cultures of Kanazawa, which has been handed down from the Kaga Domain. It is called "Kaga Hosho" because the Hosho school of Noh thrived here. However, most of the Noh costumes owned by the Maeda family of the Kaga Domain, a symbol of the prosperity of Noh, were scattered due to the confusion of the Meiji period and the sale of the costumes during the Taisho Showa period.

This exhibition brings together the Noh costumes inherited from the Maeda family, which were scattered throughout Japan, and recreates the glory of "Kaga Hosho" through the display of colorful and gorgeous Noh costumes, as well as introducing Noh masks and Noh drama materials.

The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Ishikawa Prefectural Noh Theatre. The hope is that the approximately 80 works presented in this exhibition will spark an interest in and deeper understanding of Noh and encourage visitors to visit the Noh theater.
