Ancient Cultures Nurtured by the Northern Land: Okhotsk and Satsumon Cultures

National Museum of Japanese History
Finished
In the ancient times of Japanese history (Asuka, Nara, and Heian periods), Hokkaido saw the development of the Okhotsk and Satsumon cultures. The Okhotsk culture, spanning from the 5th to the 9th century, extended from the southern part of Sakhalin to the northeastern part of Hokkaido and the Kuril Islands. It is considered an external culture that migrated from the north, relying on sea mammal hunting and fishing as the basis of life, with distinctive features in animal rituals, centered around bears.

The Satsumon culture, from the late 7th to the 12th century, spread across the entire Hokkaido under the influence of ancient mainland Japanese states. It emerged under the influence of ancient mainland Japanese states and was centered on fishing, hunting, and gathering, utilizing miscellaneous grains. It is considered a direct precursor to Ainu culture. However, despite being cultures from the same period as ancient mainland Japan, they may not be as familiar in mainland Japan.

In this special exhibition, the Tokyo University Tokoro Fieldwork Facility, which has been conducting research in Tokoro Town, Kitami City, in eastern Hokkaido for many years, collaborates with our museum to introduce these two cultures in an easily understandable manner.
