How Uno Akira's Printing Experiments Came to Be

Akira Uno is one of Japan's leading illustrators and graphic designers. Uno celebrated his 88th birthday last year, and continues to be active at the forefront of his field, armed with his "golden left arm.”

Uno has shown a strong interest in expression that can only be achieved through printing, saying, "Printing is not a sure-fire way to restore an illustration, but if the finished product is good, that is the best.”

At the "Akira Uno Kaleidoscope" exhibition held at Ginza Graphic Gallery (Ginza, Tokyo) until the end of January this year, Junko Tsuda, editor-in-chief of the magazine "Design no Hikidashi" (Graphic, Inc.), took up the challenge of designing special printing for 22 works based on original illustrations with haiku and girls as themes and tried many different methods of expression. Many different methods of expression were tried. The various experiments, which took place in various locations around Japan, included not only offset printing, but also foil stamping, silk screen printing on cardboard and newspaper, and handmade watermarked Japanese paper, which created a chemical reaction with the original works and gave birth to new Uno creations.

This exhibition focuses on the production process of works created from special printing designs, and along with explanations of the techniques, color-proof papers and printing plates with Tsuda's correction instructions will be on display. The behind-the-scenes story of how the process of trial and error was carried out toward completion will be presented under the title "Kajo (flower petals)" (stories behind the scenes), divided into the first and second halves of the exhibition.

Uno's works, which continue to exert a universal appeal that transcends the ages, have been transformed into a form that would surprise even printing experts.
