Architect Tetsu Katono and the Miya no Mori Atelier of Shin Hongo

Hongo Shin Memorial Museum of Sculpture, Sapporo
Finished

Artists

Shin Hongo, Tetsu Katono
The building that now houses the Hongo Shin Memorial Museum of Sculpture, Sapporo was designed by Tetsu Katono (1924-2009), a leading Hokkaido architect, and built in 1977 as a residence that also served as a studio and gallery for Shin Hongo (1905-1980).

This exhibition will focus on the work of both Toru Katono and Shin Hongo, using this building as a focal point. Katono has worked on numerous residential buildings in Hokkaido. Through photographs, drawings, and models, this exhibition will introduce the clean modernism rooted in the northern climate that lives and breathes there. The thoughts and feelings of the two parties involved in this building will be revealed through drawings and image sketches made during the process of creating Shin Hongo's atelier. The exhibition also traces the short time that Shin Hongo spent in this studio, and introduces the sculptures, drawings, and drafts he left behind during the year that he was in and out of the hospital after falling ill, showing how he continued to work on his creations until the end.
