This exhibition will feature the results of the "Art Book" class for third-year students in the Visual Design Course of the Design Area at the Faculty of Art, Nagoya University of Arts. In the academic year 2023, Nagoya University of Arts collaborated with Yuko Tsukada, Editor-in-Chief of Hanatsubaki Editorial Office at Shiseido Co., Ltd., and Takayasu Yamada from the Art & Heritage Management Department, who served as special guest professors. Together, the students worked on projects under the theme "Our Energy," the same as the latest issue of Hanatsubaki.

Throughout the collaboration with Shiseido, the aim was to cultivate students' awareness of beauty while encouraging them to break established concepts and prioritize sensibility and intuition. Key concepts such as "valuing waste," "taking time," and "articulating thoughts" were emphasized to create art books that defy the constraints of conventional design, with the goal of acquiring flexible thinking skills, adopting expression-oriented production methods, mastering the process of prototyping while navigating between sensibility and logic, and developing the ability to solidify expression through necessary research and technical acquisition.

The course began with lectures by Kaoru Sumi and Takayasu Yamada from Shiseido's Art & Heritage Management Department, where students learned about Shiseido's 150-year history, corporate philosophy, and aesthetics seen through its products. Practical sessions included lectures by Yuko Tsukada on the editorial perspective of the Hanatsubaki Editorial Office and workshops led by Takayasu Yamada to experience Shiseido's identity through the "Shiseido Typeface." Workshops focusing on "sensory" and "physical" approaches using various fancy papers were also conducted to break conventional thinking and encourage soft thinking through hands-on activities. Subsequently, students engaged in prototype creation over three weeks, followed by midterm presentations, before embarking on individual art book production. The unique art books created by the students were presented at an internal review exhibition in January 2024.

Paper Voice Vellum will exhibit the art books produced by 14 selected students from the internal presentation, along with posters created specifically for this exhibition. Additionally, the works of Tsukada and Yamada, along with the instructor Kazunari Endo, and special guest participant Yuka Sakuma, a Japanese painter.
