The Shunyo-kai was established in 1922 as a public solicitation organization for Western paintings in the field. Founding members included Hoan Kosugi, Tsunetomo Morita, and Kanae Yamamoto, who had left the revival Japan Art Institute's Western Painting Department, as well as leading young painters such as Ryusei Kishida, Shohachi Kimura, and Sadao Tsubaki of the Sodokai, along with newcomers like Goro Mantetsu and Ryuzaburo Umehara.
This exhibition aims to trace the history of the Shunyokai and the significance of the Shunyo-kai in the history of modern Japanese art through the "individual struggles" of the painters who have marked the history of the Shunyo-kai since its founding, using over 100 works by painters who were active from the founding until around the 1950s, using the "individualism" that has been the attitude of the Shunyo-kai since its founding as a clue.
*During the exhibition period, some works will be replaced. First half: May 25 (Saturday) - June 16 (Sunday) Second half: June 18 (Tuesday) - July 7 (Sunday)
