Featuring the works James Jarvis, Oliver Payne, Ryuichi Ohira, Jess Johnson, Matthew Palladino, Joakim Ojanen, Wahab Saheed, and Ryan Schneider, the exhibition showcases the creative freedom of artists from all over the world.

Born in 1970, James Jarvis is an illustrator and artist who bases his practice in London, UK. His distinctive style has gained wide recognition and acclaim internationally through various collaborations including the likes of Amos, Nike, Uniqlo, and Ikea. From philosophical thinking to various languages, history, social issues, popular culture, art, architecture, and even skateboarding, Jarvis’ characters that draw inspiration from such interests, despite being extremely simple in their nature, present themselves as eloquent, comical, and ironical ways.

Oliver Payne was born in 1977, graduated from Kingston University Faculty of Art and Design in the UK, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, USA. Payne began working in collaboration with Nick Relph during the late 1990s, and since 2009 has pursued his solo artistic career, creating works that draw inspiration from various subcultures such as video games and the punk rock scene.

Ryuichi Ohira is a Tokyo-born sculptor living and working in Chiba Prefecture. Wood has a high level of plasticity likewise to clay that was also one of the first materials to have been used by mankind. Not limited to works of art, it continues to be a material that is indispensable to our cultural activities, serving as a fundamental element of all living tools as well as our places of dwelling. In recent years, Ohira has returned his attention to the original characteristics of this material, producing sculptures that “remain undefined in meaning” motivated by his mindless absorption and unreasonable impulse –both of which can be regarded as primal instincts of human creativity.

Jess Johnson was born in New Zealand and is currently based in New York. In recent years, Johnson has actively held exhibitions in numerous locations including Heide Museum of Contemporary Art (2019, Australia), Tauranga Art Museum (2019, New Zealand), Christchurch Art Gallery(2018, New Zealand), and the National Gallery of Australia (2018, Australia). In particular, her VR (virtual reality) works created in collaboration with Simon Ward are attracting significant attention as a new art form that combines technology and imagination. This exhibition will present her drawing series that is based on VR.

Matthew Palladino was born in San Francisco, CA., and graduated from the California College of Arts. He currently lives and works in La Paz, Bolivia. Palladino’s artistic practice can be interpreted as an attempt to move through different dimensions. Drawing inspiration from the graphic images of cartoons and games of his childhood, Palladino's work intentionally adopts structures such as grid-like arrangements, graphical gradational expressions, vivid colors, and the compulsory flattening of perspective. The dream-like and fantastical watercolor paintings in which motifs such as fruits, plants, figurines, animals, characters, figures, etc. are arranged in a highly organized fashion, almost appear reminiscent of digital precision due to the sheer meticulousness in which they are executed. On the other hand, his semi-three-dimensional works created through the use of 3DCG and 3D printing techniques serve to traverse the boundary between analog and digital.

Joakim Ojanen was born in 1985, from Västerås, Sweden. Many of Ojanen’s motifs are inspired by his hometown in Sweden where he grew up, as well as his own living environment. From the vivid textures and richly animated characters of his paintings to the distinct color palette that brings them together, the artist’s profound sensitivity is directly reflected in his unique expressions that permeate with an air of innocence reminiscent of the works of a child.

Wahab Saheed was born in 1998 in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city and major African financial hub situated along the South Atlantic Ocean. He graduated from the prestigious Yaba College of Technology with a Higher Diploma in Painting in 2019 and currently continues to work as a painter in his studio in Lagos. Saheed’s remarkable sensibility and talent have been nurtured as a result of his persistent efforts and ongoing studies. His striking expressions created through his use of charcoal have evolved through the hundreds of portraits that he had produced at his local market as a means to earn his tuition. While this had proved to be a strenuous task, it also served as a highly valuable experience that shaped Saheed’s practice as an artist. As he continued to depict the faces of hundreds of people, he learned that the most important foundation in portraiture was to capture the emotionalism of his subjects.

Ryan Schneider was born in Indianapolis, IN, and holds a BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art. Schneider’s works reflect the idyllic ecosystem of Joshua Tree, California, where he lives and works, as well as tree spirit mythology and German Expressionism. His sharp wood carving forms and vivid colors seem to represent the calm and primitive charm of the natural world.
