Atsushi Nakata is a ceramic artist known for his strong sense of form and playful creativity. Among his body of work, the “HARI” series can be considered one of his most established and historically significant. These works are constructed by patchworking thin slab-built clay pieces together.
Revisiting this series after some time, Nakata himself remarked, “When I worked on it again after a long while, I made new discoveries!”—and found himself inspired to play once more. As a result, the series returns now as a timely and fresh expression of his current artistic interests.
Another defining feature of Nakata’s work is the application of wiped lacquer on ceramic surfaces. The mug shown in the photographs, however, is finished with black glaze and then lacquered. Each piece is entirely unique—inviting viewers to fully experience the distinctive world of Atsushi Nakata.
