The artistic exchange between Italy and Japan began during the Meiji era when Italian artists visited Japan as teachers at art schools, and it has continued for over 200 years. This exhibition sheds light on the 20th century when artists moved away from the structure of Western artists teaching Japanese artists, towards a more equal exchange, tracing the roots of Italian artworks that remain in Japan up to the present day.

Today, how did 20th-century Italian artworks come to be held in Japan? And at that time, how did the Japanese people perceive these artworks when they were brought to Japan? By asking questions like these from the perspective of the 21st century, an understanding of the relationship between Italy and Japan at that time begins.

Starting with the interaction between the Italian Futurists and Seiji Togo, and the friendship between the post-war Italian artist Lucio Fontana and the poet and art critic Shuzo Takiguchi representing post-war Japan, as well as further relationships branching out to other artists, this exhibition delves into human connections while unraveling approximately 100 artworks and documents. Through these, the exhibition re-examines Italian artworks that remain in Japan today.
