Aya Kurashiki
Aya Kurashiki, born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1993, completed the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Oil Painting Course at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2020. She is currently active mainly in Tokyo and Kyoto.

Some of Kurashiki's major exhibitions include solo exhibitions such as "One Strand of Your Hair (Was)" (Haku Kyoto, Kyoto, 2023), "Decaying Flesh, Tracing the Skull Below." (Ginza Tsutaya Bookstore Art Wall Gallery, Tokyo, 2023), "New Mutation #5 Anza Kurashiki, Ryo Nishimura 'Transference of Things'" (Kyoto Arts Center, Kyoto, 2023), "Shallow, Naturally Changing amid the Real" (Wada Gallery, Tokyo, 2022), and "Idemitsu Art Award (formerly Shell Award) Artist Selection" (The National Art Center, Tokyo, 2022).

Kurashiki has consistently reflected on the distance between individuals in the absolute isolation of human existence, categorized by her physical substance and the accompanying categorizations. She explores the otherness of gender, death, the body, the community that comes with it, and the transformative act of care to survive with others, using the system surrounding religion as a motif in her work.

She primarily focuses on flat works using the transfer technique but also handles and expresses multiple media such as installations and performances. While dealing with universal themes inherent in human beings throughout history, the premise is that Kurashiki herself is also a participant, and the themes are approached from her perspective as an artist.

In this exhibition, building on Kurashiki's exhibitions for this year, she will present works focusing on the theme of the gaze of the human subject, based on the Oriental tale of Ono no Komachi.
