Banka Maruyama "Japan and Watercolor Painting"

Koganei City Hakenomori Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Banka Maruyama, Kenichi Nakamura
Banka Maruyama (1867-1942) was a rare modern Japanese painter who painted in watercolor. He specialized in landscape painting, especially mountain landscapes, and traveled extensively to visit mountains in Japan and abroad. This exhibition traces his footsteps through the collection of the Maruyama Banka Memorial Museum in Tomi City, his hometown, and introduces works created mainly during his travels in Shinshu, Europe, and Asia.

In the second-floor exhibition room, works by Kenichi Nakamura (1895-1967), a contemporary of Maruyama, will be on display. While Maruyama's temperament kept him away from the government-sponsored "kanten" exhibitions, Nakamura's work was frequently exhibited at kanten.
