Basho: “The Unchanging and the Ever-changing” Celebrated Works from Kakimori Bunko Collection

Itami City Museum of Art, History and Culture
Finished
The Kakiei Bunko Foundation was established in 1982 (Showa 57) based on materials collected by the 22nd head of the Okada family, Rihei Okada (1892-1982, also known as Kakimori), who was a haikai poet.

The name Kakimori means "to protect the magnificent persimmon that has been in the Okada family garden since the Edo period," and the heads of the Okada family had names derived from the persimmon.

Kakimori succeeded the family brewing business and served as mayor of Itami. In addition, he devoted himself to the study of haikai literature, starting with Basho Matsuo, and collected many haikai materials, starting with the haiku poet Oninuki Ueshima of his hometown of Itami. His extensive collection is said to be one of the three greatest haikai collections in Japan.

This exhibition will present Basho's masterpieces from the Kakimori Bunko collection in one place and will explore the spirit of Basho's "unchangeable style" of haikai. In addition, several works from renga to haikai by Munegi Iio, Sadanori Matsunaga, Soin Nishiyama, Onikan, and others will be exhibited.
