Basho Matsuo was born in 1644 in Iga-Ueno (present-day Iga, Mie), became familiar with haikai in his late teens, went to Edo around age 30, and then retired to Fukagawa, where he began to search for his own style. His travelogue "Okunohosomichi" from his travels in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions is particularly famous.

In his travelogue "Okunohosomichi,” Basho Matsuo is known for his haiku poems such as "The sound of water as a frog jumps in an old pond" and "The sound of cicadas penetrating the quietness and rocks," which elevated the art of haiku to a literary status comparable to that of waka poetry.

Around 1743, 50 years after Basho's death, a movement to honor him, led by Yosa Buson began to flourish in Kyoto.
