Building with Wood - Masahiro Inayama Exhibition, Tokyo University Retirement Commemorative Exhibition

Gallery 5610

Artists

Masahiro Inayama
The exhibition originated in 2010 with the "Knowing Wood, Using Wood, Utilizing Wood" exhibition at the Graduate School of Wood Science Laboratory at the University of Tokyo. It began with a project to relocate a wooden pavilion built by students at the lab during the May Festival to the space in front of Building 5610. Among the students, was Professor Masahiro Inayama, then an associate professor, whose enthusiastic involvement in the project left a lasting impression.

Over the past 14 years, the pavilion has been relocated eight times, with Professor Inayama consistently emphasizing that "the essence of learning wooden construction begins with touching wood, experimenting with various methods, and making things by oneself." In March, Professor Inayama will retire from the University of Tokyo after nurturing a wide range of talents and contributing significantly to the field of wooden construction.

The structural theories developed by Professor Inayama, with a widening influence thanks to his guidance, have led to an increase in structures utilizing wood and have made plans for wooden high-rise buildings feasible. Through this exhibition, we invite you to explore the research on wooden structures that have led to these accomplishments, showcasing works and design blueprints that are not typically accessible to the public.

Additionally, in the outdoor space, we will erect the "Caramen Arch" pavilion, built during the early years of the May Festival through self-construction.

As a gallery that has showcased the beauty of meticulously designed structures, Gallery 5610 aims to provide an exhibition that can be enjoyed from both a specialist's perspective and by those with a general interest in the field.
