Byobu Adorning Spaces - Expansive Screens

Hosomi Museum
Finished
A byobu is a piece of furniture used as a partition or windbreak. Because it can be folded, it is convenient for moving and storage, and its versatility in how it can be folded allows it to be used effectively in various spaces.

Many byobu have paintings on them. Depending on the content of the painting, they can imbue the space with meaning or beautifully decorate the environment, becoming a tool for spatial arrangement. In the medieval period, byobu decorated with gold and silver were used in trade with other countries, highlighting their significance as unique Japanese art.

Byobu paintings have been created by many artists with a variety of themes and styles. The wide, horizontal screens characteristic of byobu must have posed a challenge for the artists.

This exhibition introduces the byobu that have adorned spaces over the years.
