Collective Channel will collaborate with contemporary artist Catherine Val, who is active in Europe with a focus on Germany, to implement the art project "Story Room," where individual stories connect to the narrative of society. Channel, operating in collaboration with different members for each project, resonates with the question posed by Catherine Val's artistic expression: "What does it mean to live as a woman in today's society?" It consists of six members, including the artist, and is a multinational team with members who are current university students from China, South Korea, and Malaysia, exploring the project from a global perspective.

This project introduces Val to Japan for the first time, showcasing her focus on various social issues faced by women, such as the difficulties and experiences they encounter and diaspora issues. Val has been focusing on giving voice and visibility to people who have been overlooked in society, creating and presenting her artwork based on dialogue with people.

This time, as an opportunity to introduce Val and her works in Japan, a workshop based on the concept of "Story Room" by multinational members will be held, along with an interactive exhibition centered around Val's self-portrait series and dialogue with participants. The exhibition and workshops will be held separately in February and March, featuring different artworks each time.

At Uradana, an old folk house in the Kyojima area where the prototype of Tokyo remains, Val's artwork series "Light Matters" will be introduced. "Light Matters" is a photographic and video work created through conversations between Val and women from various social strata in Hong Kong. These women, whom Val met during her photography residency in Hong Kong in 2019, experienced diaspora due to the Umbrella Movement and the unstable social situation. Val learned about the "darkness (reality)" and "light (hope)" in their lives and expressed them through her artwork. During the production process, with the outbreak of the Ukraine invasion, Val found resonance with the experiences and voices of women trying to escape violence from war, and she contextualized "Light Matters" in the context of contemporary Europe. In this exhibition, not only will Val's photographs and video works from "Light Matters" be exhibited, but also workshops will be held to introduce participants to the current status of diaspora around the world and create a "Story Room" where diverse conversations and opinions in society, sensitive and personal topics included, can be exchanged safely, or rather, "social stories = history" can flow.
