Seiho Takeuchi
The modern Japanese painting master, Seiho Takeuchi (1864-1942), had been employed as a painter at Takashimaya's studio since his mid-twenties. Takeuchi, who is said to have revolutionized Japanese painting by integrating Eastern and Western painting expressions, owes much of his foundation to his work at Takashimaya. During the Meiji period, Takashimaya collected foreign magazines, art books, and photo collections for the creation of sketches for export dyed textiles. Together with young painters like Takeuchi, they researched "new paintings" that could be recognized worldwide. The studio in Kyoto, the only place where one could experience overseas circumstances, was where the young Seiho honed his skills. Eventually, under Takeuchi's supervision, Takashimaya produced a series of "artistic dyed textiles" that received high praise at international expositions, and the products were exported overseas one after another. Takeuchi's and Takashimaya's work, which captivated people worldwide at the time, can be considered noteworthy in modern Japanese history.

Throughout his life, Seiho Takeuchi had a deep connection with Takashimaya. To commemorate his 160th birthday, this exhibition will showcase a comprehensive collection of Takashimaya Archives, from representative works to letters. This exhibition will introduce the unknown facets of "the man Seiho" - his joy, anger, apologies, and laughter.
