Artists

Masayoshi Nakamura et al.
Hitohitokai was founded in 1974 by a group of seven distinctive artists (Masayoshi Nakamura, Shingo Hoshino, Kikuji Yamashita, Shinichi Saito, Tetsui Ooshima, Keiichiro Sakuma, and Seizo Tajima) who resisted the traditional hierarchical structure of the art world and advocated for anti-authority sentiments. Since its inception, the group has continued its activities with a diverse range of artists who uphold the spirit of its founding principles.

The "Small Hitohito Exhibition" will be held as a related event to the "Hitohito Exhibition" (held annually at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum) from 2022 onwards, taking over the venue from the Hagurodo (established by Tosuke Kimura in 1936) in Bunkyo Ward. This exhibition will feature small works by Hitohito artists.

Additionally, a retrospective exhibition will be held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Masayoshi Nakamura, a painter known as a leading figure in the Japanese art world. The exhibition will showcase rare works including Japanese paintings, drawings, and prints, as well as publications and documents.
