Charles Munka
Charles Munka, born in Lyon, France, left France in 2000, lived in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, and since 2018 has been based in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture.

While traveling around the world, Munka has been collecting "trial writing paper" found in stationery stores for over 20 years. In this exhibition, Munka will present for the first time a series of works titled "Tameshigaki (lignes de vies)," which are newly assembled by sampling and remixing lines, letters, symbols, drawings, and other motifs left by others as "trial scribbles" with pens, pencils, and other tools.

Inspired by the "attitude of resonating ordinary daily life and art activities" of painter Sadaharu Horio (1939-2018), a member of Gutai in Hong Kong, where he was working at the time, Munka did not seek out the only few art supply stores in town in search of oil sticks Instead, he decided to use stationery as his art materials. He began to visit office supply stores, which were more numerous and accessible than art supply stores, and began to make rubbings on the street, using carbon paper for typewriters. From this point on, his approach of using everyday and insignificant things around him as creative themes gradually took root as his own style. After moving to Sado Island, Munka continued to experiment with the tracing expression that he had been facing through rubbings. He then focused on the existence of "trial scribbles," indistinguishable marks left by others that would have been discarded, and established his work as "Tameshigaki," which depicts a completely different world while being rooted in a real place.

This will be the artist's first exhibition to be held at three venues: INS Studio and The Conran Shop Daikanyama at the same time, followed by a tour to I Gallery Osaka on July 28 (Fri), with the works to be replaced.
