Chen Liang
Esther Okada Art Gallery is pleased to present for the first time Chen Liang with his series of falcon paintings. Chen was born in Tianjin, China, in 1975. After graduating from Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), he started his career as a professional artist. He is also currently teaching at the Mural Department of CAFA. This exhibition is his first solo show in Japan and will be showcasing his new series of paintings using both traditional and contemporary mediums.
”I started to draw falcons simply because I appreciate the bird’s remarkable beauty. I draw inspiration from a large number of artworks about eagles passed down from ancient times and reflect on how to interpret traditional and contemporary art while I am working on my version. The paintings from the Song Dynasty have always held my attention and fondness. Browsing each painting from that dynasty brings me exclamation, but more importantly makes me think about whether I can observe and express the world as the people of Song did in their times, and whether I can infuse the spirit of my time in the process of reproducing ancient paintings. Imperial Eagle Painting by Zhao Ji, Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty, created the school of Hawk on the perch painting. Out of affection and inheritance, I drew my Hawk on the perch series, trying to interpret this ancient mysterious falconry art with great research value in the current artistic environment.” (Chen Liang)
