Chihiro Iwasaki "Chihiro’s Wish: Peace and Happiness for All the Children of the World"

Artists

Chihiro Iwasaki
Chihiro spent her youth during a period of wartime, and following the war, as an artist and a mother, she created illustrations of children, instilling her artwork with her constant wish for peace. For Chihiro, the experience of fleeing during air raids made war something she could never forgive. Both her illustrations of children enveloped in love and of children exposed to the flames of war express Chihiro’s wish for “peace and happiness for all the children of the world.” In today’s war-torn world, including the war in Ukraine, Chihiro’s works remind us of the preciousness of peace. In this exhibit, we will focus on Chihiro’s wish for peace, showcasing scenes of children at play, illustrations of babies, and three picture books on the theme of war: Watashi ga Chiisakatta Toki ni (When I Was a Child), Kasan wa Orusu (Mother Is Not at Home) and Senka no Naka no Kodomotachi (Children in the Flames of War).
