Chiko Takei
Chiko Takei studied Nihonga at Musashino Art University and continued painting mostly portraits for some time after graduation. In those days, she created works based on a constant awareness of how they would look to the viewers’ eyes. However, she began to feel increasingly awkward about this as she became awakened by the abstract representations she was creating without giving them any serious thought in her spare time between her main productions. The themes of her works “lie somewhere deep inside human emotions that cannot be fully expressed in letters or words.” Takei, who also practices Ikebana (flower arrangement) and tea ceremony, is committed to deepening her interior aspects given the Japanese traditional sense of beauty in the course of her everyday life. When viewing her works, they will tell us that they have something in common with our memories and events. The images we see could invoke a landscape in some cases or a past emotion in others, and each encounter we have with any of her works may lead to a discovery.
