China in Ukiyo-e

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished
Many Ukiyoe paintings portray Chinese motifs, such as the great heroes of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," "Water Margin," hermits, flowers, and women dressed in traditional Chinese costumes. During the Edo period (1603-1867), classical Chinese literature and stories were widely recognized as part of the culture, and Chinese artifacts greatly influenced it. This exhibition introduces works from the Edo to Meiji periods that show the influence of Chinese culture on Ukiyo-e and explores the surprising connections between the two.
