At the Iwate Prefectural Museum of Art, we collect works by artists associated with Iwate from the Meiji era to the present. The collection is displayed in the Permanent Exhibition Room, the Tetsugoro Yorozu Exhibition Room, and the Shunsuke Matsumoto and Yasutake Funakoshi Exhibition Room. The exhibitions are rotated four times a year.

This term's special feature introduces Hisashi Momose (born 1944), who has long been a leading figure in the Iwate art scene, based in Morioka. Since the 1970s, Momose has consistently created works composed of color gradients. His techniques and materials, however, are diverse. Initially, he used silk screens with layered fluorescent ink. In the late 1980s, he developed a series using handmade paper and metal leaf. Recently, he has incorporated glitter, continually evolving his gradient paintings. This exhibition presents 38 works, including pieces from our collection, deposits, and four new works from his latest series.

In addition to Momose's works, this term's exhibition features works by prominent artists from Iwate, such as Yoshio Murakami and Eiichi Sugimura, who gained attention from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. During this period, when a young Momose began his work in Morioka, various art exhibitions were frequently held throughout the prefecture. Active artists started holding solo exhibitions in galleries, a movement for constructing an art museum began, and interest in art was rapidly growing.
