The Iwate Museum of Art collects works by artists associated with Iwate from the Meiji period to the present day, and exhibits the collection in three rooms: the permanent exhibition room, the Yorozu Tetsugoro Gallery, and the Matsumoto Shunsuke and Funakoshi Yasutake Gallery, changing exhibits four times a year according to season. This period's exhibition introduces newly acquired works from the 2022 collection.

The first artists in the collection, Tadashi Maekawa, Isao Sugiyama, and Miguel Ausili, are closely related to the Iwate University Faculty of Education's Special Art Department (1955-2000), which produced many artists in Iwate after the war. Tadashi Maekawa became an instructor in the department in 1969, teaching painting and printmaking, and devoted himself to the training of younger students until his sudden death in 1988 at the age of 59. Maekawa's work encompassed a wide range of genres, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and design, but the works in this collection are pen drawings known as his masterpieces. His exquisite pen drawings, reminiscent of unknown plants, were often used for book bindings, and his work on Junnosuke Yoshiyuki's books is considered particularly important.

Isao Sugiyama and Miguel Ausili are stone sculptors who studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Italy, which has a longstanding academic exchange with the Faculty of Education and were involved in teaching students of sculpture through production training and the organization of international symposia. Sugiyama's “Santuario (Sanctuary)" series symbolizes the relationship between nature and civilization, and Ausili's "Giardino Pensile (Hanging Garden)" series reveals his admiration for ancient culture. The works were created in Iwate when both artists were invited to participate in the "Hiraizumi International Exchange Exhibition" organized by Iwate University (held from 2008 to 2013).

In addition, Yasutake Funakoshi, Yaoji Hashimoto, Yasutaro Nachi, Sakae Terui, Rokhei Koseki, and others will also be exhibited.
