Flowers and other still-life paintings have appeared in pictures in both East and West since ancient times, but their meanings have differed from culture to culture. While in Japan, the blooming flowers were seen as a symbol of vitality and seasonality, in the West they symbolized the fragility of life as it eventually decays.
This special exhibition brings together still-life paintings from the museum collection, including works from the new collection, with a focus on Western and Japanese flower paintings. This exhibition introduces how Japanese paintings, which have been greatly influenced by Western culture since the modern era, have accepted and sublimated this influence in their depictions of flowers and still life.
