Collection Great Voyage: Departure from Ezo → Via Foreign Lands → Arrival in Hyogo

Kobe City Museum
Finished
Countries and cultures beyond the sea, people and goods traversing across the ocean – in Japan, an island nation, the sea is where people and cultures connect and intertwine. This special edition of the collection exhibition will showcase collections of antique maps, art, archaeology, and history, all centered around the common theme of the "sea."

From the antique map field, we will introduce ancient maps of Ezo, a region whose complete image has been shrouded in mystery for a long time. We will trace the footsteps of the survey of Japan's northern boundaries attempted by explorers from around the world since the Age of Great Voyages. In the field of art, we will explore the fascination with foreign cultures during the Edo period. Examining exotic patterns and motifs depicted in paintings and craftworks, we will delve into the yearning for foreign lands among people of that era. From the field of archaeology and history, we will showcase historical materials related to Hyogo Port. Reconsidering the history of Hyogo Port, which prospered as a key point on the Seto Inland Sea route since ancient times, provides an opportunity to trace the origins of the port city of Kobe.
