Souun Tazaki, Suiun Komuro
Souun Tazaki (1815-1898), born in the Ashikaga domain in Edo, was a nanga painter active from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He absorbed not only Kano school paintings, but also Chinese and Japanese old paintings, Yamato-e and Rimpa school paintings, and established the foundation of Nanga of the new era with his diverse painting techniques. Suiun Komuro (1874-1945), a native of Tatebayashi, studied nanga under Tazaki and played a central role in the Japanese painting world with his advanced painting techniques. Both were selected as Imperial Household Artists and were highly regarded as the originators of the modern Kanto nanga school, and their works are presented in the museum collection.
