Colorful Japan

Kobe City Museum
Finished
After Japan's opening to the world, during the late Edo and Meiji periods, people from various foreign countries began to visit Japan. In response to their desire to experience the unknown Japanese culture, photographers such as Felice Beato, Raimund von Stillfried, Shuzaburo Usui, Kinbei Kusakabe, Adolfo Farsari, and Kozaburo Tamamura opened photo studios where they sold photographs depicting famous Japanese landmarks and customs. These photographs were often meticulously hand-colored, giving them the appearance of color photographs, and bound into luxurious albums with decorative lacquer covers. Through careful selection of subjects, skillful composition, and beautiful coloring, these photographers created an image not of the real Japan, but of the mystical "Japan" of the East.

This exhibition brings together approximately 150 hand-colored photographs and related materials taken during the late Edo and Meiji periods, showcasing the unique beauty of hand-colored photographs and introducing the captivating image of "Japan" that continues to fascinate people across generations.
