Commemorating the 120th Anniversary of His Death: Emile Gallé - From Japonisme to Art Nouveau

Simose Art Museum
Finished
Art Nouveau, which flourished primarily in Europe from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, was an artistic movement that sought a "new style" suitable for modern living, breaking away from past decorative styles. As a result, it blossomed in various fields such as architecture, interior design, crafts, and graphic design. One of the most representative artists of this movement, Emile Gallé (1846-1904), created richly decorative works inspired by nature across three domains: ceramics, glassware, and furniture. Even 120 years after Gallé's death, his works continue to captivate.

This exhibition will feature over 80 pieces, including Gallé's glassware and furniture, as well as works by his contemporaries such as the Daum brothers and Louis Majorelle, combining the museum's collection with pieces from private collections. The exhibition space will include a room inspired by the Musée de l'École de Nancy, and will explore the background of Gallé's creations through the lens of cities significant to him, such as Nancy and Paris, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the decorative beauty of Gallé's world. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a stroll through the lush "Émile Gallé Garden." In the movable exhibition room, we will showcase our diverse collection across eight themes, including the first public display of Raoul Dufy's "Large Bouquet" and the "Naginata-hoko" by the seventh-generation Heizo Oki.
