We are pleased to announce that Sato Sakura Museum will present Construction: Architecture and Shape, an exhibition of contemporary Japanese paintings.

“Construction” encompasses the art of building with diverse materials such as earth, stone, wood, metal, glass, and concrete to create everything from buildings to bridges and roadways. Throughout history, architects around the world have produced a wide range of structures, from monuments now recognized as World Heritage sites to the buildings that shape our daily lives. Beyond their practical purpose, these structures embody the aesthetic values and cultural spirit of their time, making them captivating subjects for artists across the centuries.

Building on this background, “construction” has also become a term used in the arts when exploring composition and structure. Artists create works that go beyond simply depicting buildings to explore architectural spaces and forms through the distinctive lens that painting provides.

This exhibition features striking contemporary Japanese paintings inspired by architectural structures from Japan and around the world. Visitors will encounter works that celebrate symmetrical forms, explore geometric and rhythmic spatial arrangements, and depict architectural landscapes filled with quiet beauty. We invite you to discover the elegance of architectural structure as expressed through each artist’s unique perspective.
